Marco Bernardi

Marco Bernardi is a Professor of Applied Physics, Physics and Materials Science at Caltech. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science from MIT in 2013, working on theory and simulation of the electronic and optical properties of novel materials and interfaces, and then carried out postdoctoral research in the Physics Department at UC Berkeley, developing computational methods for excited-state dynamics in materials. His group at Caltech develops first-principles quantum mechanical methods to understand microscopic interactions and dynamics in matter. The emphasis is on quantitative, precise calculations that deepen the basic understanding of conventional and quantum materials, chart new directions in materials theory, and lay the foundation for new technologies. Bernardi's work has been recognized with the Franco Strazzabosco Award (2020), the NSF CAREER Award (2018), the AFOSR Young Investigator Award (2017), the Psi-K Volker Heine Young Investigator Award for electronic structure theory (2015), and the Intel Ph.D. Fellowship (2013).
